In a major escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan, India conducted airstrikes on May 6, 2025, targeting nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The operation, codenamed "Operation Sindoor," aimed to dismantle alleged terrorist infrastructure linked to the April 22nd attack in Pahalgam, which killed 26 Hindu pilgrims.
The Indian government emphasized that the strikes were precise and avoided military facilities, reiterating that India does not seek war. However, Pakistani authorities reported at least 26 deaths, including women and children, and over 46 injuries. Pakistan condemned the strikes as "an act of war" and vowed retaliation.
In response, Pakistan claimed it had shot down five Indian fighter jets — a claim not confirmed by India, though local reports indicated at least three Indian aircraft crashed. Heavy shelling across the Line of Control was also reported, resulting in further civilian casualties on both sides.
The situation has sparked international concern, with the United Nations, China, and the United States urging both nuclear-armed neighbors to exercise restraint and return to dialogue.
