UN: Over 4 Million Refugees Flee Sudan's Civil War
June 2025 – Khartoum: The United Nations has confirmed that over 4 million people have fled Sudan as a result of its ongoing civil war, making it one of the most devastating humanitarian crises on the African continent in recent history.
Unprecedented Displacement Across Africa
According to the UN News Center, more than 926,000 refugees have sought safety in neighboring countries such as Chad, Egypt, South Sudan, and Ethiopia. Internally, nearly 3 million people have been displaced due to intense clashes between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Dire Conditions in Refugee Camps
In Chad alone, over 800,000 Sudanese refugees are living in overcrowded camps. Humanitarian aid is severely underfunded—only 14% of the required funding has been received, according to Reuters. In South Sudan, many camps lack access to clean water, shelter, and medical supplies, putting refugees at risk of disease and starvation.
Health System Collapse and Disease Spread
Over 80% of health facilities in Sudan are non-operational, leading to a surge in untreated injuries and chronic illnesses. A recent outbreak of cholera has killed more than 170 people and infected over 2,500, as reported by AP News.
UN’s Emergency Appeal
The UNHCR and humanitarian partners have launched a joint appeal for $6 billion to support roughly 26 million people affected by the Sudan conflict. This includes refugees, host communities, and internally displaced persons.
What Can Be Done?
The international community is urged to act swiftly. This includes pressure to end hostilities, funding aid operations, and providing safe corridors for evacuation. Failure to do so risks a wider destabilization across the region.

Conclusion
The Sudan crisis is a test of global solidarity. Without immediate and sustained intervention, the humanitarian toll will continue to rise. This is not just a regional issue—it’s a global responsibility.
