Cardinals Begin Conclave to Elect New Pope

Published: May 8, 2025

In a historic moment for the Roman Catholic Church, 133 cardinals from across the globe have gathered in the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican to begin the secretive conclave process to elect the next pope, following the death of Pope Francis on April 21.

The 2025 conclave is the largest in modern history and features the most geographically diverse group of cardinals ever assembled. Cardinals from regions including Africa, Asia, and Latin America are expected to play pivotal roles in the election.

The process began with the traditional Latin declaration "Extra omnes" ("Everybody out"), signaling the start of closed-door deliberations. Up to four voting rounds may take place daily until a two-thirds majority is reached.

Top candidates reportedly include Cardinal Pietro Parolin of Italy, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of the Philippines, and Cardinal Peter Erdő of Hungary. The choice is expected to reflect both continuity and global relevance in a time of rapid change.

As per tradition, black smoke from the Sistine Chapel chimney will signal an inconclusive vote, while white smoke will announce that a new pope has been elected.
