On May 6, 2025, India launched a series of missile strikes targeting nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The operation, dubbed "Operation Sindoor," was in retaliation for the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of 26 Indian tourists. India attributed the attack to militant groups allegedly supported by Pakistan.
The Indian government stated that the strikes aimed at terrorist infrastructure associated with groups like Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba. However, Pakistan condemned the attacks as an "act of war," reporting at least 26 civilian casualties, including women and children, and claimed that residential areas and mosques were among the targets.
In response, Pakistan's military claimed to have shot down five Indian fighter jets, with some aircraft reportedly crashing in Indian territory. Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif vowed a strong retaliation, stating that the country would respond at a time of its choosing.
The situation has led to heightened military readiness on both sides, with artillery exchanges reported along the Line of Control. The international community, including the United Nations and the United States, has expressed deep concern and urged both nations to exercise restraint to prevent further escalation.
