EU Leaders to Consult Trump Before Putin Call Amid Ukraine Crisis

Growing Diplomatic Pressure
As tensions continue to escalate in Ukraine, leaders from the European Union and the United Kingdom are seeking to speak with Donald Trump prior to his scheduled call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Merz: Unity Before the Call
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Sunday that he had been in close contact with UK Prime Minister, as well as leaders of France and Poland, aiming to establish a joint Western position. “We must be united in our message before President Trump speaks to Mr. Putin,” Merz told journalists in Berlin.
Previous Talks in Istanbul Stalled
Recent negotiations between Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul have failed to produce significant progress. Merz stressed, “Time is critical. The diplomatic channels are narrowing, and we need to use every opportunity for de-escalation.”
Why Trump's Role Still Matters
Although Trump is not currently in office, European diplomats acknowledge that his influence, especially among certain political factions in the U.S. and abroad, could impact future negotiations. The planned call between Trump and Putin is expected to touch on the military and humanitarian dimensions of the Ukraine conflict.
